Running under the theme “Innovation Boosting Smart Health Experience”, the Medical Fair brings together some 300 exhibitors from 13 countries and regions.
Featuring top-notch medical instruments, healthcare products and advanced technologies alongside a stellar line-up of global scientific and medical experts, the Fair is a showcase of groundbreaking medtech and investment possibilities, as well as a platform for industry exchange and collaboration among the medical industry, academia and business community in Asia and beyond.
The Fair spotlights pioneering medical tech, green solutions and gerontechnology this year, covering the latest medical devices, products and remedies to elevate our general health ecosystem and improve clinical effectiveness, including medical diagnosis, smart hospital and digital healthtech.
The Fair is sectioned into various exhibition zones featuring a diverse array of products and services, including the Startup Zone, Biotechnology, Hospital Equipment, Medical Supplies and Disposables, Laboratory Equipment and Manufacturing Solutions Zone, Rehabilitation and Elderly Care, and World of Health and Wellness.
Apart from sourcing, participants can join the Fair’s healthcare-related sessions covering AI-based health technologies, the digital transformation of mental health services, elderly and rehabilitation care, and the silver economy, among other trends, to learn about the latest industry developments and build meaningful connections.
A key event is the HKMHDIA Medical Fair Forum, co-organised by the Hong Kong Medical and Healthcare Device Industries Association (HKMHDIA). Themed “The MedTech Nexus of the Greater Bay Area”, the Forum provides insights on intellectual property strategies for biomedical innovation and discusses ways to integrate resources in the Greater Bay Area’s medical technology market. Industry experts will also share successful experiences in promoting medtech in the Greater Bay Area.
- Hong Kong has the highest life expectancy in the world thanks to its advanced healthcare services. In addition, the city expects to be home to an increasingly aging population, as is the case with many other developed economies, in the years to come. The number of elderly people aged 65 or above is projected to increase from 20% of the total population in 2021 to 32% by 2041.
- The ageing population, as well as increased health consciousness among consumers, are boosting the demand for healthcare services and products. According to the Food and Health Bureau, the total public and private health expenditure in Hong Kong was around HK$284.1 billion (US$36.4 billion) in 2022-23, representing 10.0% of GDP.
- Hong Kong’s medical and healthcare equipment and devices sector mainly targets the household consumer market. Externally, Hong Kong’s total exports of medical and healthcare equipment decreased by 3.5% in 2024, but actually increased by 10.2% in the first two months of 2025.
- Technology plays a major role in the healthcare industry. Developments such as smart hospitals and telehealth provide innovative and sustainable solutions to challenges arising from escalating service demand. The HKSAR Government is in the process of setting up an InnoLife Healthtech Hub in the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park (HSITP) to better leverage Hong Kong’s strengths in the life and health sciences. In the 2024 Policy Address, the Government set out plans for a HK$10 billion I&T Industry-Oriented Fund as a fund-of-funds in order to channel more market capital into specified emerging and future industries of strategic importance, including life and health technology.
- The development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) presents a number of opportunities for Hong Kong healthcare businesses. Designated healthcare institutions operating in the GBA are allowed to use Hong Kong-registered drugs and medical devices approved for Hong Kong public hospitals, subject to assent by the appropriate Guangdong Province authorities. According to the catalogued (2024 version) recently released by the Guangdong Provincial Medical Products Administration (GPMDA), 34 drugs and 37 medical devices have been approved for use in 45 designated healthcare institutions via the Measure.
- To foster medical cooperation between Hong Kong, the Mainland and overseas, following the Chief Executive’s advocacy of improvements to the drug registration system in the 2022 Policy Address, the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Hong Kong added the drug regulatory authorities in four locations (the Mainland, Brazil, Korea and Singapore) to its list of specified reference places under secondary evaluation as of November 1, 2022. This allowed drugs registered in the Mainland and in relevant places to be registered and used in Hong Kong. The 2023 Policy Address subsequently introduced a new "1+" mechanism in order to expedite the approval of new drugs and promote the development of clinical trials and research and development of drugs in Hong Kong. In the 2024 Policy Address, the "1+" mechanism was further extended to include all new drugs, including vaccines and advanced therapy products, while improvements were also made to the approval mechanism in order to speed up registration.
